Save money — and less waste — with this easy technique to paint a faded outdoor umbrella instead of throwing it in the landfill. Get tips on how to clean an umbrella and what painting techniques work best, and find out what it looks like years later!

Do you have a perfectly thin parasol on your patio that has faded from the sun?

If everything else works – open mechanism, no holes, etc. – then resuscitating it with…paint is worth it.

Really – and with just a base coat of spray paint. Our canvas covers look 100 times better after using spray paint, so I’m sure you will too.

Wait, can I draw my outdoor umbrella?

It’s correct! I’ve tested two types of painting methods and only one – spraying – works well.

Our Front Patio Umbrella

We’ve had a basic black canvas outdoor umbrella for about five years. For most of that time, we didn’t have a garage or anywhere else to store it for the winter, and the constant exposure slowly caused the black color to turn gray.

However, what is surprising is that it is still in good condition, with only a few small holes in the top thanks to the birds that love to wander there.

I’m surprised I found a really good deal on this – I paid $40 less for itwithan easy-to-open crank design instead of the cheaper wooden pulley system. So it works with canvas umbrellas.

How to Paint a Fuzzy Outdoor Umbrella

However, when the umbrella reached the point in the previous photo above, I felt like I couldn’t ignore it anymore. The umbrella is no longer just gray but a faded gray that contrasts radically with the black underside.

Since the underside was still black and the canvas had a nice shape, I decided to try erasing another season by painting the top. What do I have to lose?

Step 1: Clean the umbrella

First I have to answer the question:

Can you wash an umbrella?

I see you have two options for cleaning:

  1. Use the machine.
  2. Since mine is a cotton sheet, I just throw it in the washing machine on a regular cycle with soap and vinegar. After putting it out to dry it looked great, even the mold was gone! (Another surprise…)
  3. Hand washed.
  4. If you are unsure of your cover material, you can spread it out and wet it with a hose. Then scrub with a brush and soap before rinsing with a hose and letting dry. If it’s mold, add vinegar instead of soap or vinegar.

So yes, you can wash an umbrella. Our previous photo of the parasol (above) is actuallyaftercleaning, so you can’t see the green mold streaks above – or the bird droppings. It’s disgusting.

Step 2: Paint the umbrella

Spray paint:As I wanted to make this as simple as possible (always my goal!), I used black spray paint – and the cheapest interior-exterior paint I could find, as I don’t expect that it lasts more than one season and that’s just an experiment.

Spoiler: since this was a huge hit – check out the update below – now I’ll spend $4 instead of 0.99 and get this matte black spray paint, lol. Who knows how long it will last after that?

Painting usually with a brush or a roller:I haven’t researched this DIY process so I don’t know if it existsarticles on eCommenton the paint of a faded umbrella. But I can tell you this:

I do NOT suggest using regular paint and a sponge brush or roller like the article.

I tried it when the spray ran out and found it took a long time, and the paint seeped into the fabric, creating a rough, ugly texture on the underside.

I also found it impossible to apply evenly with a sponge – maybe a small roller would work better for even distribution, but I still have issues with seeping into the fabric.

Based on these experiences in the aerosol vs brush/roller debate, I would definitely opt for aerosol.

How to spray paint an umbrella?

  1. Remove the frame cover
  2. (unscrew and remove the cap from the mount) and lay it flat on the grass (we just mowed the black spray paint) OR cover the area with paper or a loose cloth if you don’t want to use the lamb.
  3. Start from zero
  4. and spray paint the flat edges and vents and the underside of the vents.
  5. Spray one by one
  6. , be sure to get all the seams and corners.
  7. Spray a second coat after drying –
  8. It won’t cover evenly, so let it dry a bit, then spray in a different pattern.
  9. Allow to dry completely, reattach the umbrella frame then use the ladder to apply a third coat.
  10. (You can do this step up to the 2nd coat, not 3 coats but it will be more speckled). It’s actually really easy to stand up and rotate the umbrella while I’m spraying, but I’ll still do the first few coats with the umbrella flat to get the tops, seams and edges without worrying about painting on the frame.

Step 3: optional transparent overlay

Jacket with awaterproof puttyafter the paint is completely dry, although the only option for this is to roll it on, as I can’t find any spray products. (I did not do this.)

Tips for drawing umbrellas

  1. I had to spray a lot of paint
  2. . Ours is a 9 foot long umbrella and I used 5 cans of paint. He could use another box, so I’m planning one for each part of the umbrella. I found matte black paint for $1 a can, so the total investment is $6! I know it’s not normal –
  3. this is a paint i will use now
  4. . It’s still less than a $20 investment – and I know you’ll get years out of it.
  5. Use a paint gun
  6. attached to the top of the box. Trust me, your fingers won’t stretch, so it’s worth it and you’ll love it.
  7. Use a paint mask for added safety
  8. This is a cheap 10pk respirator with a valve to eliminate odors.

Looking closely, you can see the coverage is still a little patchy. My daughter thinks it looks like photographers backdrops so I’m going to do it that way.

I think it looks 100% better. In fact, a million times better than blue mold on a matte gray.

Especially for a few dollars.

  7. This is a 9 foot option.
