Multi-read content how high should outlets be

During the remodeling process, clients and customers asked me a lot of questions. Recently I had a question about the height rules for mounting sockets, sockets and switches. However, there are certain rules regarding outlet placement, height of outlets or wall switches that are not part of the NEC code. At the very least, the code avoids rules about standard heights for switches and outlets.

General rule for Outletdistance

The main rule is what is called the 6’/12′ rule. NEC 210-52 states the following (abbreviated to make it easier to digest):

Outlets are needed in every room of the house so that no point on the wall is more than 6 feet from the outlet. This means you need an outlet within 6 minutes of a door or fireplace. However, a long wall can have up to 12 feet between takes. Any output above 5 6 cannot be factored into this equation. Floor outlets away from the wall can be less than 18″.

There are also other guidelines that must be followed. For example:

  • Each hallway must have at least one storage compartment if it is 10′ or more
  • Kitchen counter outlets require at least two 20 amp circuits and must have GFCI protection. Leave no more than 4 feet between counter outlets.

How high to mount the shelf or socket

Now to the point of this article. For occasional elevations, it’s not handled very well (and we’re happy about that). Generally, you want to mount the containers with the bottom of the box about 16 inches off the ground. Coincidentally, that’s about the same height as the 22-ounce framed hammer in your yard. However, we always recommend using a ruler.

how high to mount receptacles

How high to mount the kitchen shelf?

For kitchen counters, the height at which you mount outlets depends on your layout. There are no height guidelines except to keep them under 20 inches maximum. This seems obvious since the top cabinets start at 18″). The location depends somewhat on how you plan to implement the backlash. If you mount the bottom of the box about 2-3 inches above the top of a tile, solid surface, or reflective stone, you will have a well-positioned and easily accessible outlet.

How high do I mount receptacles and switches

As for the fridge, you have some flexibility. Typically, we install these outlets about 48 inches from the floor.

How high do you mount the light switch?

Typically, you install the light switch about 48 inches above the floor (center). This may vary, but we’ve found it to be a general rule and works well with builders and contractors in our area. We also tend to run them as a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit, although the code may not require this.

How High to Mount Light Switches

Editor’s note: We know of a guy who has all of his switches set up to be mounted 30 inches off the ground. At first we thought it was accommodation for a disabled family member. After further questioning, we found out that just letting him turn on the lights in every room without having to raise your hand… While there’s technically nothing wrong with that, we don’t recommend it. potential resale value of your home versus a trending decision based on laziness or trying to be different! Follow the implicit standards.

Epilogue

Construction planes can have measurements that indicate measurements at the center, top, or even bottom of the box. You just need to double-check your work to make sure everything is in place and that you have enough ergonomics to activate all your switches and efficiently access your outlets. I hope knowing the mounting height of your sockets and switches will help you get started with the most important layout and design tasks!
